Detectives investigating Thai Town armed robbery at Newcastle West arrest youth at West Wallsend

Police allege a youth threatened restaurant workers with a knife and demanded alcohol after targeting the busy Newcastle West business.

A teenager has been charged with armed robbery after allegedly threatening staff inside the busy Marketown Shopping Centre with a knife in a bid to steal alcohol.

Police said officers were called to Thai Town on Parry St about 9.50pm on October 1 last year where they were told a male had allegedly threatened staff with a knife and demanded bottles of alcohol before fleeting on foot.

Following an investigation, Newcastle City detectives executed a search warrant at a West Wallsend home about 10.30am on Monday.

During the search, officers allegedly seized “a number of clothing items relevant to the investigation”, police said.

A youth, 16, was arrested at the property and taken to Waratah police station where he was charged with robbery whilst armed with an offensive weapon.

The teenager was granted strict conditional bail to appear before a children’s court on February 20.
