A critical incident investigation is underway after a man at the centre of a police pursuit allegedly shot himself dead at a beach near Newcastle overnight.

A critical incident investigation is underway after a man at the centre of a police pursuit died from a gunshot wound, allegedly self-inflicted, at a beach near Newcastle overnight.
Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were called to a home in Thornton, just after 9pm on Sunday over concerns for a man’s welfare.
Police were told the 36-year-old, who was allegedly armed with a firearm, had left the property in a vehicle.
Following inquiries, the vehicle was located shortly after travelling on Newline Rd, Seaham.
When the vehicle failed to pull over, police initiated a pursuit.
The vehicle came to a stop near Stockton Beach, Williamtown, and the man ran onto the beach.
He was dound dead, suffering an allegedly self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A crime scene was established and a critical incident team from Tuggerah Lakes Police District are examining all circumstances surrounding the incident.
Their investigation will be subject to an independent review.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
