A court has heard a man helped out a mate to get rid of a firearm after it had been used to blast someone in the stomach during a heated street dispute in the Upper Hunter.

Bradley Carpenter, 27, pleaded guilty to hindering the discovery of evidence of a serious indictable offence after he “secreted and disposed” of a firearm which had been used by Dallas Kimber during an incident on June 27, 2022.

A 31-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to his stomach on Anzac Pde in Muswellbrook just after 6pm.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Following an investigation by Hunter Valley detectives, Kimber was arrested in Muswellbrook a short time later.

It wasn’t until five months later that Carpenter would then be charged for the hinder offence.

The court heard the 27-year had a “misguided desire” to assist one of his friends and was not paid any money to do so, and that the victim had actually been one of his friends.

Carpenter also pleaded guilty to two charges of unauthorised and prohibited possession of a firearm and one charge of possession of ammunition after police raided a property and uncovered “clearly homemade” firearms.

In Newcastle District Court on Tuesday, Carpenter was sentenced to one year and 10 months jail with a non-parole period of 11 months.

With time already served, the court heard he could be released next month.

Meanwhile, Kimber pleaded guilty to fire firearm manner likely injure person and reckless grievous bodily harm, with no further proceedings indicated with a charge of discharge a firearm and intend to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was also due to be sentenced on Tuesday but his matter was adjourned until June with the court hearing further psychological material was required.
