It was a plan that would ultimately backfire for a Newcastle man when the victim he was proposing to rob got a heads up before being targeted - and then slept with his new girlfriend.
Andrew Jeffrey Gregorenko, 38, had only been in a relationship for two days when the pair had been hanging out at the Mark Hotel in Lambton on July 28 last year with another female friend and a man.
But, according to police facts, when the other woman accused Gregorenko’s girlfriend of owing her money, a plan was hatched to rob another friend of all his money and drugs after he had hit the major jackpot at the pub the night before.
Going along with the plan at first for fear of her safety, the girlfriend contacted the man through Facebook messenger early the next morning before she was invited over to his home at Wickham for a ‘sesh’ after he sent an Uber to get her.
Court documents revealed when the woman arrived at the Hannell St residence at around 5am she instantly told him of the plan to rob him before the pair did some ‘ice’ and had sex.
Police facts said it was some hours later when Gregorenko messaged his girlfriend and said he was “reddy to come kick doors in (sic)” and he was “just about there”.
But when Gregorenko arrived and kicked in the door to the victim’s unit, the resident had already called police after hearing what he believed to be a group of people trying to break in.
The victim fled into a rear courtyard until police arrived where the 38-year-old Gregorenko was also found by officers and arrested.
His girlfriend was also hiding in the bathroom of the unit where she was also arrested.
Both were taken to Newcastle police station where the woman told officers of the plan to rob the victim and she was released without being charged.
In Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, Gregorenko appeared via video link and pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and intentionally damaging property.
He’ll head to the District Court next month for a sentence date to be set.
