Female traffic controller injured after allegedly being struck by stolen car in police chase at Jesmond

A female traffic controller is in hospital with pelvic injuries after allegedly being struck by a stolen Mercedes SUV during a brief police chase in suburban Newcastle.

A female traffic controller is in hospital with pelvic injuries after allegedly being struck by a stolen car during a pre-dawn police chase in suburban Newcastle.

Emergency services were called to Newcastle Rd at Jesmond after 2am on Wednesday after the 21-year-old traffic controller was allegedly struck by a silver Mercedes Benz SUV as it was being pursued by Newcastle City police.

“Police had initiated the pursuit only moments earlier when the SUV – which had been reported stolen from Salt Ash – was seen allegedly travelling above the speed limit,” police said in a statement.

“Police immediately rendered assistance to the injured woman while the alleged driver of the stolen SUV was arrested after being chased down on foot”.

The woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital where she is reported to be in a stable condition with pelvic injuries.

Police said a search of the man allegedly found methamphetamine with an estimated potential street value of almost $2000.

The 30-year-old Killingworth man was taken to Waratah police station and charged with eight offences including aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – escaping pursuit; dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – driving in a manner dangerous; causing bodily harm by misconduct, in charge of motor vehicle; taking and driving a conveyance without consent of owner; driving recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous; police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously: possessing a prohibited drug: and licence expired more than two years ago.

He is due to face court on Wednesday.
