A teenager has been granted conditional bail after police were allegedly forced to crash their way into a Newcastle East unit after a man was stabbed in the head.

Officers arrested Xander Eathen Barry, 18, after they entered the Nobbys Rd apartment following reports of a concern for welfare about 2.10pm on Friday.

Police will allege Barry stabbed a 46-year-old inside the premises.

They further allege the men knew each other.

The injured man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition with what police said were non-life threatening injuries.

Barry was taken to Newcastle police station where he was charged with reckless wounding.

He faced Newcastle Bail Court on Saturday where he was granted conditional bail, including reporting to Waratah police station three times a week, not enter Nobbys Rd at Newcastle East, not drink alcohol or take drugs and comply with an apprehended violence order.

Barry will face Newcastle Local Court again on August 27.
