School teacher arrested over alleged sexual assault of student

A Sydney schoolteacher accused of sexually assaulting a male student in her car and sending him sexual snaps on social media will make another bid for bail in the Supreme Court.

Monica Young, 23, has been behind bars for more than a week since she was charged with 10 counts of allegedly sexually assaulting the teenage boy at a Sydney high school.

She appeared briefly in the Supreme Court on Monday to set a date for her latest bail application, which will proceed on August 13.

Young was originally refused bail by Magistrate Glenn Walsh at Bankstown Local Court as the court heard police discovered explicit images of her alleged victim on her computer following her dramatic arrest on July 10.

“The material mentioned was found on the computer and there is CCTV from the school … which shows certain conduct which is inappropriate conduct,” Mr Walsh said.

“I accept that those who love her support her, but I am not satisfied that cause has been shown as to why her detention is not justified.”

Police prosecutor Ms Gardiner told the court Young changed her name on Snapchat and spoke to the teen’s mother in what police say was an attempt to cover up the alleged sexual assaults.

“When it was identified that Snapchat was being used to communicate with the complainant, (Young) continued her use of that service by presenting herself under an assumed name so she could continue to have sexual interactions with the complainant,” the police prosecutor said.

“We can see in the interactions her becoming aware of the circumstances and she has continued to attempt to communicate with the complainant.”

Young will apply for bail in the Supreme Court in August.

Detectives will also allege some of the sexual interactions were caught on CCTV at the school at the centre of the alarming allegations.

“There is CCTV evidence that supports some of the allegations,” Ms Gardiner said.

“The detectives have had an opportunity to review some of the recorded evidence and they have identified some recordings and photographs on the computer system of the applicant of an interaction between the applicant and the complainant involving an explicit image.”

The school where Young worked cannot be identified due to court orders for the complainant’s protection, but parents from the school recently received a letter acknowledging the allegations against their then-staff member.

“I can confirm that the person who is the subject of the police matter was a teacher at our school, however, they are no longer undertaking teaching duties and have been told not to come to the school,” the school principal said.

“It is not suggested your child has been involved in the matters before the court, however, if your child discloses they have been subject to or witnessed any potentially concerning behaviour from a staff member it is requested that you contact police.”

Young was soon to be married to her partner of six years, who told media his fiancee was innocent following her arrest.

New images of them together depict Young in happier times, attending weddings and family events with her partner and posing for selfies.
