It was to have been her dream start to a year Page McGregor hopes she will remember for a lifetime - playing for her country in front of family and friends at a stadium “in my backyard’.
But McGregor said it is now more likely she will be playing a support role with the Australian team at the upcoming Sydney Sevens tournament at Bankwest stadium at Parramatta.
The Tokyo Olympic aspirant, who trains at Moore Park with the national program, is still recovering from a serious shoulder injury with the Hong Kong Sevens in April a more realistic return goal for the 20-year-old than the Sydney Sevens from February 1-2.

“I hurt my shoulder in the AON Sevens series. I dislocated the back of my shoulder and tore some muscles so I’ve been out for the past two months, going on three months,’’ said McGregor, who did a school visit to Paramatta Boys High late last year to drum up support for the Sydney Sevens.
“My goal last year was to be back for the Sydney Sevens but I will still be there, helping in any way and cheering from the grandstand.’’
“I’m a proud girl from Sydney’s west so it’s hard not to be playing but I’m still glad to be part of it.’’
A former member of the Bulldogs Tarsha Gale Cup side, Bankstown based McGregor was the second youngest player awarded a professional contract with the Australian sevens squad when just 18.
FUTURE PLANS: Wanderers player and his love for the game
Since then she has played two seasons with Macquarie Uni and one with Brisbane in the Aon series and made both her Australian and World Cup series debuts to be in the mix for the Australian team hoping to defend its gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in September.
“It’s all be a dream come true,’’ said McGregor, who also played some rugby with South East Magic last year.
“Tokyo is the big goal for me, the same as all the others.’’
It was watching the Australian sevens women - now her teammates - win gold at the Rio Olympics four years ago that made McGregor drop all other sports - including soccer, touch and rugby league - to concentrate on rugby and potentially being in Tokyo later this year.
