Nutri-Grain ironwoman, ironman: Lizzie Welborn chasing podium finish

There’s a good reason ironwoman Lizzie Welborn is refusing to work out what she needs to do to protect her position on the podium in the professional ironwoman series.

To Lizzie Welborn there’s nothing worst than having numbers flying round in her head when she’s racing.

It’s why the surf lifesaver has refused to study the pointscore ahead of the finale of the Nutri-Grain ironwoman and ironman series at Cronulla Beach on January 19.

“I don’t want to think about it at all,’’ said the Maroubra based ironwoman who now trains with the Newport surf lifesaving team on the northern beaches.

Welborn said she just has to go out and do her best and hope things fall her way.

“I’m third overall at the moment and all I know is I can get second but I don’t know how and I don’t want to,’’ she said.

Ahead of Welborn on the pointscore is northern beaches star Georgia Miller, now training on the Gold Coast, while Queenslander Lana Rogers cannot be beaten for the series crown after three wins and a third in the opening legs.

Athletes at the end of the series are allowed to drop their worst result and with this worked in ahead of Cronulla, Miller and Welborn are on equal points.

“With Lana having already won, the battle for second is going to be big,’’ Welborn said. “I’m really excited.

“It was one of the goals I set at the start of the season - to get a podium.’’

Heading into the final round of the ironman, Kendrick Louis leads Tanyn Lyndon overall but their positions are reversed when a drop is worked in.

Other northern beaches athletes competing in the ironman on Sunday are Max and Charlie Brooks and Jackson Borg - all from Newport surf club.

Also racing the ironwoman event is Naomi Scott from Manly.
