Senior officer shares ‘daily dangers’ in line of work after alleged police assault

A man allegedly struck and tried to kick two police officers who were trying to arrest him and his gang who had allegedly assaulted three males and robbed their car in Lakemba.

Seven young males, including a 15-year-old boy, have been charged after three other men and two police officers were allegedly assaulted in Lakemba.

Campsie PAC Crime Manager Detective Chief Inspector Paul Albury told the Express the injuries allegedly suffered by his officers highlight the dangers the team faces every day.

He said six officers in his command have been assaulted this year.

The eldest of the group, a 21-year-old man, allegedly struck and kicked towards two police officers who were making the arrest at Lakemba.

The three men suffered minor injuries but did not require medical treatment at the time while their vehicle, a Suzuki Swift, was recovered by police.

Both officers received minor injuries at the time, Det Chief Insp Albury said.

“Upon being arrested one offender struck and kicked towards two officers,” Det Chief Insp Albury said.

“Both officers received minor injuries as a result.

“The total number of assaults on police this year have been six.

“The incident at Liverpool Police Area only a week ago where an officer had his throat slashed and he was stabbed in the hand highlights the dangers of the work that police face every day.

“Thankfully many police only receive minor injuries in assaults but on occasion police in this command have suffered serious knee or shoulder injuries that have occurred during violent arrests of offenders.”

Campsie Police said about 1am on Sunday, three men, two aged 24 and one 31, were walking towards their vehicle on Railway Pde, Lakemba, when they were surrounded by a group of seven males.

“The men allegedly demanded property and assaulted the three friends before stealing a mobile phone, keys and ear pods,” a police spokesman said.

“Two of these males allegedly stole a Suzuki Swift belonging to one of the men, driving it from the scene.

“Police were called and responded immediately, arresting seven males nearby.

“The Suzuki was recovered nearby on Bellevue Ave.

“The three men who were robbed received minor injuries (but) however didn’t require medical treatment at the time.”

The seven men who were arrested — aged 21, 20, 19, two 18, and one 15 — were all taken to Campsie Police Station.

The 21-year-old man has been charged with robbery in company, two counts of assaulting police and resisting arrest.

The 19-year-old man has been charged with robbery in company, and be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.

The other five were all charged with robbery in company.

All, except the 15-year-old, were refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.

The juvenile was granted conditional bail to appear at a Children’s Court on Thursday, July 18.
