The message from Bankstown police is clear – if you do the wrong thing on our roads, you will get caught.

Bankstown police participated in the statewide launch for Operation Merrett, a NSW Police Force initiative aimed at curbing death and injury on local roads.

Duty officer Matt West said minutes after police set up a random breath testing site in Georges Hall on Henry Lawson Dr yesterday, a driver was caught with methamphetamine in his system.

“We’re trying to reduce fatal accidents, particularly ahead of the Easter period,” Inspector West said.

“Every police car, marked or unmarked, trucks and Traffic and Highway Patrol, and every police officer is committed to this operation.”

Bankstown police will target speeding, pedestrian safety, mobile phone use while driving, seatbelt compliance and drink and drug driving throughout Operation Merret.

As of yesterday morning the number of deaths on NSW roads in 2018 had reached 90 people, up from 67 at the same time in 2017.

“People aren’t getting the message,” Insp West said. “You cannot drive under the influence because we are ramping up our drug testing, 24 hours a day, and you will not escape.”

The Bankstown region particularly has had a horror year on the roads so far.

Mere minutes into 2018 a 17-year-old girl died in a horrific crash in Yagoona that also left her friend fighting for her life. Just last week a six-year-old boy and his mother were hit by a car as they used a pedestrian crossing in Bankstown. The driver was charged with negligent driving.
