PANANIA Sport and Recreation Centre will close and the land will be handed back to the council after a steady decline in numbers.

Revesby Workers’ Club, which rescued the centre in 1986, will vacate the property once its lease expires this year.

A club spokeswoman said the centre, on Homelea Ave at Panania, had seen a decline in patrons and its main purpose had become a meeting place for subclubs, barefoot bowls and occasional functions.

“At the conclusion of this lease, Revesby Workers’ Club will remove all owned property and hand the facility back to council,” the spokeswoman said.

“The three staff will resume duties within the Revesby Workers’ Club group.”

Canterbury-Bankstown Council had agreed to a month-to-month lease while the club vacates the property, which has a clubhouse, three bowling greens, two tennis courts and 100-space carpark.

In 1986, Revesby Workers’ Club management agreed to rescue the centre, paying all its debts and acquiring all assets. “At the conclusion of this lease, the Revesby Workers’ Club other site, Revesby Bowling Club, will reopen as Revesby Workers Sports Club with fully renovated dining, bar, lounge and outdoor facilities providing the essential space to meet the needs of all sub clubs, bowlers and other sporting groups within the club and local community,” the club spokeswoman said.
