THOUSANDS showed their support for the anti-domestic violence campaign during last Friday evening’s fifth No Excuse for Abuse march in Lakemba.

Representatives from local Police Area Commands, schools, community groups, organisations and residents got into the spirit of the event, which is now regarded as one of the campaign’s largest marches in Australia.

The march, organised by Campsie Police Area Command and Canterbury Bankstown Council, began at Gilles St, Lakemba, before finishing at Parry Park, Punchbowl, with a community barbecue and performances from local groups.

The Australian Cooks Island Community Council (NSW) is among the organisations that has been supporting the march since it started in 2013.

Their representative Margaret Nekeare-Cowan said: “In our community, domestic violence is still considered a taboo subject, so co-ordinated events like these that involve community groups, police and council, really bring it into focus.”
