The Sydney Regional Illegal Dumping investigators have tracked down and fined a Kingsgrove man for illegally dumping car parts in bush at the Royal National Park.

Canterbury Bankstown Council said the 28-year-old was fined $2000 by the Bankstown-based RID squad, which led the investigation.

RID investigators said they traced the spare parts found in the park to a Hurstville man who told them he had given the car — a wreck — to the Kingsgrove man to use for parts.

Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said his council came down hard on illegal dumping and praised the work of the RID team.

“After some good detective work, they (the RID squad) found the owner of the vehicle the motor was removed from,” Cr Asfour said.

“RID officers found the body of the vehicle on the Kingsgrove man’s property and he was forced to go back to where he dumped the parts, remove them and dispose of them correctly.”

The squad is funded by Canterbury Bankstown, Bayside, Georges River, Randwick, Strathfield, Sutherland and Waverley councils and the Environmental Protection Authority.

“I am proud that the Sydney RID Squad … is regularly busting people who don’t do the right thing in disposing of materials,” Councillor Asfour said.

This year, the Sydney RID squad have investigated more than 3102 incidents of illegal dumping across eight council areas, and issued $75,000 in fines and 391 clean-up notices.

The council’s innovative #EyesonIt anti-dumping campaign, where residents can inform the authorities of illegal dumpings, has also been very successful in 2019, with 4,758 incidents investigated.

The council said because of the reporting by residents, illegal dumping in Canterbury-Bankstown has been reduced by 57 per cent this year.

The campaign had identified Bankstown, Campsie, Lakemba, Belmore and Punchbowl as the suburbs with the highest number of illegal dumpings.

However, at the end of the campaign’s second phase, there was up to a 70 per cent reduction in illegal dumpings in those suburbs.
