A bag of cannabis and a knife were uncovered in a southwest Sydney home after a man threatened to stab a family member and called them a “pig” and a “gronk” following a heated argument.

When asked by police if he remembered threatening to stab his family member, Sonmez “denied ever saying that”.

The 20-year-old was arrested before he informed police ‘I have some pot in my bag’.

“Police found a resealable bag containing green vegetable matter… Sonmez said he uses it before he goes to bed,” the facts state.

Sonmez’s lawyer Ms Coorey said while her client made threats, they were in the “heat of the moment”.

Magistrate Shane McAnulty warned Sonmez his behaviour was “not trivial” and advised him to avoid using drugs in future.

“The use of drugs will not make it any better. If you are tempted I suggest you steer well and truly away from it,” he said.

“What you did was not trivial, it can be serious and has the potential to escalate.”

Sonmez was convicted and sentenced to a two-year conditional release order.
