CANTERBURY Town Centre is being transformed into a more modern and greener place in a much needed $5.2 million upgrade which includes raised pedestrian crossing, underground power lines and a charger for electric vehicles.

Stage one of the upgrade will start this week and is scheduled to be finished late next year.

A Canterbury Bankstown Council spokeswoman said the work will concentrate on improving the intersection at Charles, Roberts and Close streets.

The transformation will see raised pedestrian crossing, a charging unit for electric vehicles, footpaths, tree planting, garden beds, rain gardens, outdoor seating, underground power lines, new lighting poles and kerb and gutters.

Mayor Khal Asfour said focus of the upgrades will be on making the centre clean and green and moving and integrated, two of the seven key areas identified by the community in the 10-year plan.

“Investing in our town centres is about revitalising them and activating main streets,” Cr Asfour said.

“In this case, it’s about bringing new energy and excitement to Canterbury, and transforming it into a commercial, social and cultural heart of the city.

“The area will be made even greener, with trees, garden beds and rain gardens installed, and the streetscape will be planned for not only cars and public transport, but for cyclists and pedestrians as well.”
