BANKSTOWN Airport’s ambitious development plans will include a 162,000sq m of building areas, a mixed use retail precinct and possibly a hotel while providing at least 2000 jobs.
Sydney Metro Airports CEO Lee de Winton said it is exciting times as Bankstown Airport works on the Major Development Plan (MDP) over the coming months and years.
The south west precinct development will cost more than $20 million and covers more than 40 ha.
“The current MDP is for the development of a 37,000 sq m institutional grade warehouse with ancillary office, and civil works for the remainder of the estate including roads,” Ms de Winton said. “It will have to go through all the governmental processes and community comments but we expect the first stage to begin within 12-18 months.
“The fully developed site will have the potential to comprise up to 162,000 sq m of building areas for warehouse and aviation uses.
“We have conservatively estimated it will provide for 2000 (non-aviation) jobs once fully developed.”
Ms de Winton, a former RAAF Wing Commander who took over as CEO last year, said they have also earmarked up to 10,000sq m for a mixed use precinct, with potential for a hotel.
The MDP will be in the commercial zone under the 2019 Master Plan and the business zone in the 2014 Master Plan. “The airport will own all the assets developed at the site,” Ms de Winton said.
“Our objective is to accommodate a range of transport logistics and distribution facilities, commercial, industrial, warehousing and aviation-related support industries in the form of a major logistics hub to meet the needs of the growing western Sydney community,” she said.
She said the expansion will benefit from the proximity to Sydney Airport, Port Botany, Moorebank Intermodal and the new Western Sydney Airport, the estate will provide occupiers more direct routing and less congestion than any other site in Sydney.
We are targeting a 6 Star Green Star rating across the precinct.”
“At the gateway to South West Sydney our intention is to provide the booming population in South West Sydney a place to work
The South West Precinct is a predominantly unused and undeveloped portion of the airport, the majority of which is not required for aviation purposes.
The proposed development site is located adjacent to the existing road network of Henry
Lawson Drive to the west via Tower Rd and/or Starkie Drive, and Milperra Rd to the south.
The Bankstown Airport Aviation Zone is located immediately to the north and the Georges River Golf Course is located to the west.
BACKGROUND:
Bankstown Airport was established as Sydney’s second aerodrome in 1939 with the commencement of World War II and was commonly known as Yantown because
several United States Army Air Force squadrons were based on the site during the war.
The RAAF and the Women’s Australian Auxiliary Air Force were based at the Airport before the arrival of the US military. After the war, the airport was used by the Department of Immigration to accommodate European migrants until mid-1950.
By 1970 the Airport was the biggest general aviation airport in the southern hemisphere with more than 250,000 aircraft movements annually.
It was privatised in 2003.
