They are the lockdown lifelines granting Sydney-siders brief moments of joy — possibly even happiness in isolation — as we wallow in a never ending loop of what can only be described as our own nonfiction version of screen legend Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day.
Instagram, Reddit and even the social media channels of local gyms, nail salons and hairdressers, desperate for the state’s lockdown to end, have been taken over by lockdown memes.
Social demographer and secret meme-lover Mark McCrindle said the rise to power over the internet for meme culture came at the perfect time.
“Laughing in the face of adversity is an Australian’s best character trait,” Mr McCrindle said. “This is why we love memes so much.
“Interacting online is, once again, one of the only way we can connect with colleagues, extended family and friends and conversation through memes is a big part of that.”
Mr McCrindle said it was a day in the sun for memes.
“They are current, reactive and give commentary on our situation and our society,” he said.
“This is a new way of satire and communication.
“The beauty of memes are they are visual and easy to follow, it ensures that what took place at the coffee machine in the office can still take place.”
The social demographer said the up-tick in memes showed Millenials and Gen Z are “well and truly at the forefront of business”.
