Three people have escaped serious injury after their boat caught fire hundreds of metres offshore at a south Cronulla beach.

Social media users have posted video and photos of black plumes of smoke spiralling from the water 350m off the shore of Oak Park rock pool.

A NSW Police spokesman said three people were on board the boat but are all off safely.

“The boat is still well alight and has not been put out yet,” the spokesman said.

The NSW Police Marine Area Command are responding to the incident.
