A man has been carjacked at gunpoint after he took a prospective buyer for a test drive in a car he was selling before the man produced a handgun and forced him from the vehicle.

At 8.10pm yesterday a man arrived at a Caringbah address to view a white Nissan Patrol advertised for sale.

The man and the male car owner went for a test drive before the man stopped near the roundabout on Elouera Rd at Cronulla and produced a handgun, demanding the owner get out of the vehicle.

The offender took the owner’s phone and drove away before the owner alerted witnesses in a nearby car and they attempted to give chase.

The witnesses returned the man to Caringbah and he contacted police.

The offender arrived at the Caringbah home with a woman in a blue SUV, who also left the scene.

Sutherland Shire police officers established a crime scene and a search for the vehicle was unsuccessful.

Anyone who witnessed the incident on Captain Cook Drive is urged to come forward.

Police have appealed for anyone who has information about the 2004 white Nissan Patrol with NSW registration of BF47SC, not to approach it but to contact police immediately.
