Starbucks arriving at Westfield Miranda in March 2020

Pumpkin spice latte, anyone? American coffee chain Starbucks is coming to a southern Sydney shopping centre soon – but it will take the place of a beloved local coffee chain cafe, which has already been shuttered.

American coffee chain Starbucks will be brewing up pumpkin spice lattes at a new outlet in Sydney’s south within weeks – but customers are dismayed it will take the place of a beloved local coffee chain, which has already closed down.

Jamaica Blue on Level 1 at Miranda Fair has already closed down in advance of Starbucks moving in sometime in March, leaving frequent customers disappointed.

A second outlet on Level 2 near the fresh food precinct remains in business.

Hoardings around the former Jamaica Blue shopfront indicate Starbucks is now hiring ahead of their imminent opening.

The American chain is best known as their nation’s most seminal coffee brand and for their seasonal specialty drinks including the cult pumpkin spice latte, iced green lemonade and their unicorn frappuccino.

Starbucks also attracted the amusement of Australian coffee connoisseurs around the world when they introduced their American customers to the flat white – a novelty, rather than a staple in the northern hemisphere.

“A uniquely Australian coffee, slightly stronger than a latte, with steamed milk,” Starbucks states on their website of the flat white.

“Expertly steamed milk poured over a double shot of our signature espresso and finished with a thin layer of velvety microfoam.”

In recent months Jamaica Blue at Westfield Hurstville has also shut down, while the Starbucks outlet at the same centre remains open for business.

In another recent blow for Australian coffee chains Gloria Jean’s has also closed at Miranda Fair and Cronulla Mall.

However, Starbucks appears to be mounting a revival of sorts in NSW, after they shut 61 Australian outlets in 2008.

In addition to the upcoming Miranda store, Starbucks also has outlets in Westfield Hurstville, Westfield Eastgardens and at Sydney’s airports, in addition to others across Australia’s east coast.
