A woman allegedly texted her friend wondering if a motorcycle rider was hurt after police say she hit him with her car and then fled the scene.

Police allege Molly Cahill, 22, was driving on the wrong side of the road on Forest Rd in Penshurst at 1.20am on Monday when she struck a motorcycle carrying a 36-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman.

The pair, who are in a relationship, were left with significant leg injuries after they were thrown from the bike and are still recovering at St George Hospital.

Cahill sobbed heavily in the dock at Sutherland Local Court as her Legal Aid solicitor told Magistrate Les Mabbutt her first and only child had died in January when he was just weeks old as a result of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

However, the police prosecutor opposed bail because Cahill allegedly admitted to friends she knew she had hit the motorcycle.

“From texts and phone calls it appears that the accused was aware that a collision had occurred,” he told the court.

“There is a text saying “what if I hurt him?”

Cahill was granted bail with strict conditions including a curfew between 8pm and 8am, daily reporting to Kogarah police station, and that she surrenders her passport.

Cahill’s solicitor Ms Underwood did not enter a plea to two counts of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm, failing to stop and help after a crash and not keeping left of the dividing line.

The matter was adjourned until April 23.

The young woman from Sans Souci was already subject to a community corrections order related to an earlier offence and had previously failed to appear in court as required twice.

“She only started getting into trouble in the past 12 months,” Ms Underwood told the court.

Cahill’s criminal record was described as slim though she had previously lost her provisional driver’s licence through demerit point suspension.

“Police say she made calls and messages to friends, and other people, about what took place and that she knew someone was possibly injured, and that ‘I was on the wrong side of the road’,” Mr Mabbutt said.

“If she is convicted I consider it’s a strong case and she is likely to serve imprisonment, though exactly what kind is a matter to be determined.”
