A young wife was left with a deep purple bruise five inches long and two inches wide after her husband allegedly assaulted her in their Rockdale home on Thursday, a court has heard.

Nathan Gibbons, 26, buried his head in his hands in the dock at Sutherland Local Court as several members of his family wept while police prosecutor Mr Goode detailed the accusations against him.

“The alleged offence was committed in the victim’s home,” Mr Goode said.

“There is an injury which is five inches long and two inches wide, deep purple in colour and we have a photograph.”

Police will allege the victim’s psychologist reported the abuse she had suffered to police before officers charged Gibbons with assault causing actual bodily harm.

“The witness spoke to the victim about her being afraid of her partner,” Mr Goode said.

“The victim said ‘you are making him out to be a monster – everything is fine, it’s not that bad’.”

Mr Goode said the victim had been reluctant to provide any information about the alleged violence.

“Police have only been made aware about the alleged violence by the psychologist due to the escalation in behaviour,” he said.

“This is domestic violence where intervention is required – it is a classic case where the police need to intervene.”

Gibbons, who is yet to enter a plea, was given bail to reside with his parents in Northmead prior to his next court appearance on March 13.

He will have to report to Parramatta police station on a daily basis and is subject to an apprehended domestic violence order while the matter is before the court.

Gibbons is undertaking a road design traineeship with the Roads and Maritime Service while studying part-time at university.

His Legal Aid solicitor Mr Breen said he had strong community ties.

“He has been an active participant in his local church, attending bible studies,” Mr Breen said.

“He has also been a leader in certain aspects.”

Magistrate Michael Connell said Gibbons faced extremely serious charges.

“These are allegations of extremely serious offences of domestic violence,” Mr Connell said.

Gibbons has no prior criminal record.
