A young woman will soon learn whether she faces months behind bars for a shocking hit and run in Sydney’s south which left a motorcyclist and his passenger severely injured.

Molly Cahill, 24, was sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment after she drifted onto the wrong side of Forest Rd in Peakhurst in April 2019, hit a man and his partner on his bike, then fled.

At a dramatic local court sentencing a hysterical Cahill was ordered to serve at least 18 months behind bars but was granted bail prior to a District Court appeal against her sentence’s severity.

However, Judge Dina Yehia at Downing Centre District Court has adjourned her decision on Cahill’s appeal until Friday after the court heard she has recently fallen pregnant.

The court also heard Cahill recently started working at a local preschool and is studying an early childhood diploma through TAFE.

At her sentencing in August Cahill pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, causing bodily harm by misconduct and failing to stop after a hit and run.

The male victim suffered a horrendous “de-gloving injury to his thigh” as well as cuts and fractures which required six surgeries, sutures and screws to be inserted into his leg.

His partner required skin grafts to her knee and two surgeries for a wrist fracture.

During her local court sentencing Magistrate Michael Antrum noted Cahill had told a community corrections officer she “did not feel at fault for the accident”.

“There is a need for you to understand that the injuries suffered were significant and probably lifelong,” Mr Antrum said.

“I’ve expressed my concern about your lack of insight and proper contrition and remorse.”

The court heard Cahill was suffering from insomnia and post-traumatic stress prior to the crash after the tragic death of her seven-week-old son due to sudden infant death syndrome.

She will learn whether her appeal has succeeded at Downing Centre District Court before Judge Yehia on Friday.
