A rising rugby league star at a Sydney NRL club turned to dealing drugs because he had too much time on his hands while his reserve grade competition was suspended due to COVID.

Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs SG Ball player Michael Farah was caught dealing MDMA after police saw prospective customers dancing in front of his co-accused’s car outside a Sydney pub.

Farah had barely turned 18 when he was charged with prohibited drug supply on June 20 this year.

Police pulled over his mate’s Mitsubishi Lancer near Northies in Cronulla after officers saw two young men dancing in front of the car before getting inside and driving away.

“Police explained the vehicle had been stopped as police believed their actions were the result of drug supply within the vehicle,” agreed police facts state.

“Police searched Farah’s right front pants pocket and located a small clear resealable bag containing a crystal-like substance.”

Officers searched Farah’s co-accused and found nothing, but a subsequent search of his vehicle uncovered a small bag containing a crystal substance and a large resealable bag containing a “large crystal-like substance”.

Farah pleaded guilty to knowingly participating in prohibited drug supply after an examination of his phone uncovered “extensive communications in relation to drug supply”.

“He was questioned as to messages on his phone related to drug supply, to which he made full admissions, stating ‘oh yeah, that was last night’.”

Farah was sentenced by Magistrate Michael Crompton at Sutherland Local Court to a two-year conditional release order conviction.

Farah’s solicitor Wayne Pasterfield said the budding footy player had “the world at his feet”.

“Because of the pandemic the lower grades have been put on hiatus,” Mr Pasterfield said.

“He’s not had as much to do and that’s how he’s involved himself in this situation.”

Farah, from East Hills, played his junior football for the Bankstown Bulls.
