Man faces court over alleged car rampage in Sutherland

A 61-year-old man who allegedly went on a shocking rampage and smashed several cars in Sydney’s south had to be dragged from his vehicle when he refused to get out after a pursuit across several suburbs. The man will face court today. PHOTOS:

A man allegedly smashed into several vehicles, nearly missed pedestrians and sent a car spinning out of control in a shocking rampage that ended with a police pursuit across several suburbs in Sydney’s south this morning.

A 61-year-old man will face court today after his Hyundai Getz allegedly crossed onto the wrong side of the road on East St in Sutherland and collided with a Toyota Corolla, sending it spinning into a parked Holden Commodore.

The man allegedly crossed onto the wrong side of the road at Adelong St, hitting another Toyota Corolla as it attempted to move out of the way.

Patrons at a nearby cafe surrounded the vehicle before the Hyundai allegedly reversed over the median strip and narrowly missed pedestrian.

The Hyundai allegedly hit a Suzuki Swift on Linden St as it slowed to stop at a red traffic light then rammed it three times before continuing on.

Sutherland police and the Public Order and Riot Squad found the Hyundai travelling at low speed on Menai Rd at Bangor before a low-speed pursuit began.

The Hyundai allegedly ran a red light at Yala Rd before it eventually stopped on Anzac Pde.

The driver refused to get out of the car and officers had to smash a window to remove and arrest him.

The driver allegedly refused a breath test and he was taken to Sutherland police station where he was subjected to a breath analysis. which returned a negative result.

The man was charged with refusing to submit to a breath test, drive a motor vehicle to menace, not stopping when directed, and running a red light.

He was refused bail to face Parramatta Bail Court today.

None of the drivers allegedly hit by the man were injured but a male constable is receiving treatment for minor injuries at St George Hospital after being involved in a collision at the intersection of President Ave and Acacia Rd in Sutherland with a Mazda 3 as he responded to the incident.

The crash will be subject to investigation.
