It’s sounds a little odd but fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis couldn’t be more relieved to have a couple of screws and wiring in his back.
It is what has helped him reignite a dream of playing for Australia and seen him back playing with his Premier Cricket club Sutherland in the Kingsgrove T20 Cup and the Sydney Sixers in the upcoming BBL.
On Sunday Dwarshuis and his Sutherland team, a club he has been playing with since he was a junior, fell two runs short of victory against St George in the Kingsgrove Sports T20 local derby live-streamed on www.dailytelegraph.com.au.
“I was having lots of repeat stress fractures. Every time I tried to increase my workload I’d get a stress fracture,” said the fast bowler of the surgery 20 months ago.
“The surgeon put a couple of nails through the vertebrae and wrapped some wire around for stability... that’s the simplified version.
“It adds a little support and gives you the chance to put up with the stress fast bowling puts on your body.
“The last year of cricket has been pain free … the longest period without a back injury in my career.”
The Sixers bowler was selected in the Australian squad for the T20 tri series two summers ago but didn’t get a game. However, a rebuilt and fighting fit Dwarshuis has not given up on his dream of playing for his country.
“I learned a lot from my time and hopefully I get a chance to be involved in another one” he said.
“The Big Bash and this (T20 Cup) are a big part of being noticed.
“For me, taking wickets in the best way for me to get noticed.’’

Sutherland were restricted to 6-143.

Going into the November 22 round, Sydney lead the Sydney Sixers conference from Sutherland, Gordon, University of NSW, Eastern Suburbs, UTS North Sydney, Mosman, Manly Warringah, Randwick Petersham and St George.
