A man has been charged with attempting to buy a gun during an illicit drug supply operation in Sydney’s south.
Drug and Firearms Squad detectives who were investigating illicit drug supply under Strike Force Narus allege Medhi Ayyad, 21, was attempting to buy a Glock pistol and ammunition online.
After extensive investigations strike force investigators arrested the Bexley man at a Rockdale car park at 11am on September 16.
A subsequent search of his vehicle allegedly uncovered one-and-a-half tablets of Viagra, which police say was stolen or unlawfully obtained.
Ayyad was taken to Kogarah police station and charged with attempting to acquire a pistol without a licence or permit, attempting to acquire ammunition for a firearm without a licence, possessing a prescribed restricted substance and having stolen or unlawfully obtained goods.
“The offence is serious and is a concern if he was able to carry out the offence in acquiring a firearm,” police wrote in their bail consideration for Ayyad.
“The accused declined to speak with police regarding his reasons why he was seeking to acquire a firearm.”
Police also say there is a strong case against Ayyad, who has no criminal history aside from some traffic offences.
He currently works as a carpenter in a family business.
Ayyad briefly appeared with a solicitor before Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday before the matter was adjourned until December 10.
