Driver charged with assaulting police during Caringbah traffic stop

Two police officers were allegedly kicked and punched by an “extremely hostile” driver during a traffic stop in Sydney’s south yesterday.

An “extremely hostile” driver has allegedly punched and kicked two police officers during a traffic stop after they allegedly hurled abuse and made offensive gestures from their passing car.

A 32-year-old man and his brother were stopped on President Ln in Caringbah at 10am on Monday after they allegedly screamed and rudely gestured at two officers on foot on the Kingsway.

The police caught up to their Toyota Camry and conducted drug and alcohol tests before the driver allegedly reached through the open window, punched the senior constable in the face and swung his legs up and kicked him.

He also allegedly kicked and punched a second senior constable before his brother, 29, tried to prevent his arrest.

Other police arrived and handcuffed both men before the driver was charged with two counts of assaulting police, resisting arrest and offensive conduct.

His brother was charged with wilfully obstructing police.

Both were refused bail and will face Sutherland Local Court today.
