A woman was hospitalised after she was allegedly pushed to the ground and sexually assaulted by an unknown man as she walked along a Sydney street, prompting a police investigation.

A NSW Police spokeswoman confirmed Sutherland Shire detectives are now investigating the alleged sexual assault, which occurred in Cronulla at 10.30pm on October 17.

“The 33-year-old woman was walking along Richmount Street about 10.30pm, when she was approached from behind and pushed to the ground, before being assaulted,” the spokeswoman stated.

“She was taken to St George Hospital for treatment.”

Residents in several nearby Cronulla streets received a letter from detectives seeking witnesses and relevant CCTV footage from the time in question.

“The assault occurred in the vicinity of Arthur Ave, Ingalara Ave, Ewos Pde and Richmount St,” the letter states.

“Police are seeking any witnesses or CCTV footage in relation to this matter.”

The alleged attack has caused distress in the Shire community, with women in local Facebook groups sharing personal safety tips including how to set off a panic alarm on an iPhone and discover online whether a partner has ever been subject to a violence order.

“As inquiries continue, anyone with information that may assist investigators is urged to contact detectives at Sutherland Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” the NSW Police spokeswoman said.
