High-rise development is soaring up in Sutherland once again as Sutherland Shire Council gives the green light to a block of 50 units.
The $14.56m development at 681-683 Old Princes Highway and 24 Belmont St was approved last week and will include eight one-bedroom units, 39 two-bedroom units, three three-bedroom units and three levels of basement car parking as well as communal open space.
Seven of the one-bedroom units and seven of the two-bedroom units will be adaptable.
The applicant said the six-storey block was sensitively designed for the area.
“It provides housing in an accessible location and will utilise the existing transport and essential services,” the applicant wrote.
“The surrounding locality is currently characterised predominantly by low density residential development to the northeast and northwest but the area is transitioning to high density residential in accordance with the desired future character for the area.”
The block is currently surrounded by single storey homes but is zoned for high-density development up to eight or nine storeys.
Sutherland has attracted significant numbers of new developments, although it is unclear if demand will keep up with supply as unit blocks fly up at pace.
The 62-unit Linden block in Sutherland is currently in limbo after money ran out in July last year and the building contractor withdrew from the project in January.
The major South Village apartment development in Kirrawee also has plenty of apartments remaining since the first units were completed alongside the associated shopping centre last year.
