A patched Hells Angels bikie has been sentenced for affray after his friend allegedly coward punched a Victorian police officer so hard he has lost his sense of smell.

Bradley Newman, 28, threatened four people after his friend and co-accused Nathan Bass allegedly punched the man in an unprovoked attack and immediately knocked him unconscious in Cronulla last March.

Sutherland Local Court Magistrate Glenn Bartley heard the police officer was so badly injured when he hit his head on the pavement on March 11 he now has anosmia – a condition which decreases his sense of smell and taste.

The incident took place in Cronulla Mall in March 2018.

“If you c***s wanna get your heads pumped, keep going, otherwise just leave it,” Newman told the victim’s friends after the alleged attack by Bass.

Newman was convicted and sentenced to a three-year community corrections order, 400 hours of community service and ongoing medical treatment from his general practitioner.

Bass will face Sutherland Local Court charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm on January 10 after he allegedly told police he was the only person who threw punches that night.

There is no suggestion Bass has any affiliation with outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Police allege Bass bumped the victim’s friend on the shoulder before a verbal argument broke out at 12.30am.

“A male whose identity can’t be established punched (the man’s friend) in the face, and (the man’s friend) punched the male in the face in an act of self defence,” the agreed facts stated.

“Bass stepped forward and punched (the victim) in the side of the face with his right hand.”

The victim immediately lost consciousness, fell back and hit his head on the concrete footpath.

A bystander gave chase after Newman, Bass and their friends left the scene for 2230 Restaurant and Bar.

The men involved in the incident fled to the now-closed 2230 before police were called.

“It was a perfect, clean hit and it made a loud crack,” the male bystander told police.

“There was no provocation, and no warning that a punch was going to be thrown.”

The victim’s doctor told police he suffered a non-displaced right occipital fracture and a conte-coup left-frontal contusion.

“(The victim) is also suffering from anosmia, a loss of smell and taste,” the agreed facts stated.

“He estimates he has 50 per cent of his ability to smell and taste compared to before the assault.

“The doctor is of the view ‘this condition is, in all likelihood’, permanent and it will significantly decrease his quality of life’.”

Newman was supported in court by his wife, who is pregnant with their first child.
