Police are investigating an extraordinary string of car break-ins across neighbouring suburbs in Sydney’s south in recent days, leaving windows smashed, valuables stolen and residents outraged.

Sutherland Shire police are investigating 19 reported car break-ins in Barden Ridge, Menai, Alfords Point and Heathcote since Monday.

Some of those break-ins are believed to be linked and police believe there may have been additional incidents which are yet to be reported by the victims.

Inquiries are continuing into the incidents and police are investigating reports of two men observed in the vicinity of one of the offences.

“Of all the reports received, all but one of the vehicles entered had been left unlocked, so we urge everyone to keep their vehicles locked,” police said on Facebook.

“One vehicle had its window smashed, which had valuables left on the front passenger seat.”

One local resident reported his car was broken into in Friendship Pl, Illawong, while another man’s wallet was allegedly stolen after attempts to break into his toolbox failed in Barden Ridge.

One woman reported her car was broken into at Hibiscus Cl in Alfords Point, while another woman said her father’s car was broken into on Casuarina Rd in Alfords Point.

Yet another woman reported her son’s car was stolen entirely from their driveway in Black Cl, Illawong with a boot full of tools.

One man said tools and equipment worth thousands of dollars were stolen from his locked ute on Thomas Mitchell Dr in Barden Ridge.

Residents expressed their frustration and despair at the crime spree on Facebook.

“It is tedious but I have had to start unloading my ute every night,” one male resident said.

“You have to keep things locked, they’re targeting all areas in 2234,” a female resident added.
