NSW faces a crucial battle as a dozen new cases of COVID-19 came out of the blue after 12 straight days without any community transmission.

There are now 27 active cases of COVID-19 across NSW after 12 new cases were identified in the 24 hours to 8pm on Wednesday.

Four of the new cases are returned overseas travellers in hotel quarantine, while eight others are locally acquired.

The southwest Sydney suburb of Belimbla Park has the highest number of cases per postcode with three.

Penshurst in Sydney’s south also recorded its first ever cases since the pandemic broke out.

Anyone who attended a pilates class from 8am to 9.15am at Fitness First Carlingford is considered a close contact of a confirmed COVID-19 case.

Those affected have been ordered by NSW Health to immediately get tested for the virus and self-isolate for 14 days even if they test negative.

NSW Health is directly contacting the class attendees.
