A low-level drug dealer has sobbed while being handcuffed and jailed after police busted open an alleged party drug ring involving the keen raver and friends.

Alex Rainbow, 24, was jailed for 13 months at Hornsby Local Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to prohibited drug supply and participating in a criminal group.

The court heard Rainbow, who identifies as non-binary, started running drugs for alleged syndicate kingpin James Calleja, who offered to pay off Rainbow’s $900 rent debt.

Rainbow’s solicitor Philip Cox said Rainbow sold six capsules for $30 and drove Calleja to drug deals for lunch and an energy drink.

“Calleja did not have a drivers license so he (allegedly) called on her for a favour to drive him,” Mr Cox said.

“On the first occasion she was given a lunch and an energy drink.”

However, Magistrate Bruce Williams said 4168 intercepted voice calls and 2116 texts revealed Rainbow was a “happy and willing” participant in Calleja’s alleged scheme, as they took MDMA caps into festival events and sold them allegedly on his behalf.

According to court documents the drug ring would communicate through Wickr, an encrypted messaging app.

Police also listened into conversations between Rainbow, Calleja and alleged co-accused Lucy Kelly where they spoke about selling at a Sydney CBD rock music venue.

“In relation to offences they aren’t opportunistic, there was planning, she did receive calls,” Mr Williams said.

“While the financial gain was small, the offence was committed for financial gain.”
