A teenage carpenter from the Sutherland Shire was slapped with a criminal conviction after he was arrested selling almost $2000 worth of cocaine to a single buyer outside a trendy inner city bar.

Ky Fox, 19, pleaded guilty and was sentenced for two counts of supplying cocaine, and one count of dealing with the proceeds of a crime at Downing Centre Local Court on Friday.

According to police documents tendered to court about 4.50pm on June 11, police targeting dial-a-dealer activity in Sydney’s inner city noticed a man enter and quickly leave a car on Fitzroy St with a package in his hand.

Police suspected a drug transaction had taken place and approached Fox in his car, who said he had come into the city to see the “Vivid” light festival.

Police arrested Fox and identified four bags totalling 3.7g and $3750 cash in his car, including $2000 wrapped in a bundle in his wallet.

Police found evidence of the drug deal on Fox’s iPhone and identified him as the facilitator of two prior drug deals on June 10 at The Rocks and Surry Hills, where he sold eight bags of cocaine for a total of $2750.

Police alleged the $2000 taken from Fox’s wallet was the proceeds from the previous night’s drug supply transactions and alleged he supplied 4.8g of cocaine that night.

Fox’s lawyer William Barber told the court the young man appeared at court with his stepfather and mother – who had told the court they had been unaware of the extent of Fox’s drug use.

“He’s got the full support of his family,” Mr Barber said, adding he had been “doing everything he cannot to reoffend”.

Mr Barber said the man, who was training as an apprentice cabinetry maker, had “a very strong work ethic” but had been self-medicating with cocaine.

Magistrate Miranda Moody said she recognised Fox had begun psychological counselling and had indicated he would also undertake drug and alcohol counselling, but warned the young man “will be convicted” given the severity of the charges.

“A dial-a-dealer is a scourge on our society,” Ms Moody said, adding the facts showed the young man had been “greedy”.

“He wanted the money.”

Magistrate Moody convicted Fox and sentenced him to 14-month conditional release order, under the condition he engage in drug and alcohol counselling and psychological counselling.
