A mother and her children have had a lucky escape after their car caught on fire during peak hour traffic in Sydney’s south.
Emergency services arrived at Heathcote Rd, near Old Illawarra Rd, at Lucas Heights about 4.15pm after reports a car was alight.
The patients were assessed at the scene, with paramedics treating the woman and a young girl for minor burns.
The girl also sustained an injury to her foot.
The car was completely engulfed in flames and was totally destroyed.
A small patch of grass also caught alight but it and the car were quickly extinguished by Fire and Rescue and Rural Fire Service crews.
Traffic came to a halt on the busy road as emergency crews worked to clear the scene, with one of two lanes closed but both directions are now open.
The car has been towed away.
