Tiger Daher sentenced for attacking pregnant wife in Hurstville unit

“Grotesque” footage of a man dragging his pregnant wife along the floor of her apartment complex during a domestic violence assault has been shown in court.

Tiger Daher jailed for domestic assault

Shocking and graphic surveillance footage of a chilling domestic violence incident where a husband dragged his pregnant wife along the ground while she tried to flee has been shown in court.

Tiger Daher, 24, was jailed in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to common assault, intimidation and damaging property at his wife’s Hurstville unit complex in January last year.

Agreed facts tendered to the court said police were notified of a domestic dispute at the woman’s address but could not find her so they viewed CCTV footage of the incident, showing the couple arguing near an elevator.

The woman yelled loudly at Daher to go away prompting him to become angry, tense his body and yell, “I will f-----g knock you out”.

Daher moved his body towards the woman to scare her, raised his clenched fist and made a punching motion but did not connect with her body.

Daher grabbed the woman’s arm as she tried to leave causing her to fall over.

The couple yelled at each other before Daher feigned punching her causing her to flinch.

The woman fell over and Daher grabbed hold of her by the arm and dragged her into the unit while she kicked her legs out in an attempt to flee.

A short time later the woman left the unit and complex via the fire escape.

Later that morning, police found Daher and the woman on Bond Street, Hurstville before he was arrested, but the woman did not make a police statement.

The court heard Daher also kicked the woman’s locked glass entry door three times, causing it to shatter.

In court, Magistrate Phillip Stewart sentenced Daher to 22 months in prison with a non-parole period of 13 months.

Mr Stewart described the incident as “grotesque” and the footage “unpleasant to watch”.

“The conduct could better be described as having menacing and violent overtones in an obvious power imbalance upon a defenceless pregnant woman,” he said.

“There were verbal and physical actions towards the victim that caused her to flinch and to get on the floor in what appears to be a protective reaction.

“The sight of a woman, especially a pregnant woman, being dragged against her will by the arm along carpeted flooring as she screamed and tried to break free affirms the serious nature of the offending.

“The offender’s actions were cowardly, controlling, demanding and belittling.

“She was distraught and he ignored her pleading to be left alone.”

Mr Stewart said Daher, who was on parole at the time, took no responsibility for his action and claimed he tried to stop his wife leaving to obtain drugs, but that wasn’t supported in the evidence or CCTV audio.

The court heard Daher, whose child was born in May, 2022, had a “troubled past” and had abused drugs to self-medicate his PTSD, but was now abstinent.

Mr Stewart said Daher expressed no remorse and found he did not provide good prospects of rehabilitation.

With time served on remand, the sentence was backdated to December 7 last year and he will be eligible for release to parole on January 6, 2024.
