A father has narrowly avoided going to jail for subjecting his partner to a “controlling relationship peppered with violence” for many years due to “roid rage”.

Rony Sukkar, 45, pleaded guilty to 17 charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault when he fronted Sutherland Local Court on Thursday.

The court heard Sukkar was violent towards his now former wife from 2016 to 2022 at their Beverly Hills home.

Agreed facts said Sukkar, who now lives in Burwood, on several occasions held his wife by the face, back of the head, squeezed and kicked her and caused bruising.

The court heard Sukkar was addicted to steroids and cocaine and his wife was “smaller, weaker and unable to put up much resistance because of his physical strength”.

In one example in January last year, Sukkar’s wife confronted him about having an affair and an argument started before he kicked her twice.

On other occasions, Sukkar spat on his partner and pushed her into their pool three times.

Sukkar kicked his wife in the thigh several times causing large bruises to her legs and later that day grabbed her face and arms, causing red marks and bruising.

Magistrate Hugh Donnelly said the case was an “extremely serious” example of domestic violence.

“What he did was reprehensible and he instilled fear in her,” he said.

A victim impact statement was read to the court where Sukkar’s wife said she came to Australia in 2012 as a “happy person” who had graduated university as a mechanical engineer but then “lost herself” after being subjected to years of abuse.

“I felt trapped and alone and had no one to turn to for help,” she said. “I was sick of being in survival mode. I didn’t come to Australia to live like this.”

The woman described how she had “no voice” during their relationship and suffered ongoing trauma.

The court heard Sukkar had completed courses for his anger management and behaviour in relationship, and had become drug free.

A psychologist report stated Sukkar lacked impulsive control and became aggressive and violent from his steroid addiction, often known as “roid rage”.

Mr Donnelly took into account Sukkar’s nil criminal history, noting he was considered a man of “good character” but said his wife “bore the brunt of his bad character in the home”.

Mr Donnelly decided not to send Sukkar to prison noting he was not allowed to contact his ex-wife due to an apprehended violence order, was with a new partner, had demonstrated remorse and started rehabilitation.

Sukkar was placed on an intensive corrections order for three years where he must complete drug and alcohol counselling, relapse prevention programs, anger management counselling, be abstinent from drugs and do 500 hours of community service.
