A recovering drug addict has learnt his fate for brandishing a knife at another driver to intimidate him during a road rage incident.

Peigeng Son, 26, pleaded guilty to being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, custody of a knife in a public place and possessing prohibited drug; and he was sentenced in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday.

Agreed facts tendered to court said police responded to a dispatch job over the radio on shortly after 2.30pm on June 26 which said a driver had thrown an item at another car.

The police heard a driver was waving around a knife in an effort to get the other driver to pull over on the Grand Parade, San Souci.

Police located Son driving on Bay St in Brighton Le Sands and he was arrested.

Son was sentenced in Sutherland Local Court.

Son, who lives in Caringbah, made full admissions to being involved in the road rage incident with another driver, the documents state.

He said he waved the knife at a male driver so he would “back off”.

Police found a silver Stanley knife on the car floor as well as ice pipes and cannabis inside a vitamin jar.

Son admitted he had drugs in the car and that he was a regular meth user.

The court heard Son was studying as a civil engineer while working at the bar at the time of the offence but was now working for an electrician.

Magistrate Holly Kemp said the road rage incident which involved a knife was serious, before acknowledging Son was compliant with police from his arrest, made admissions and pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

She noted Son had completed a drug rehabilitation program and despite poor attendance and results in the beginning, he had since responded well and stuck with the difficult program.

Ms Kemp also acknowledged Son had taken “real and positive steps” towards his rehabilitation and was continuing with counselling.

She said Son’s drug issues directly related to the road rage incident and noted his addiction needed to be treated so he could rid drugs from his life.

Son was convicted and sentenced to a 16-month conditional release order.
