A Sutherland man has been caught driving almost 50km/h above the speed limit along Bangor Bypass before he was detected driving with drugs in his system.

Jonathon Hasan Tini 30, was sentenced in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to driving at a speed more than 45km/h and driving with an illicit drug present in his blood.

Tini was convicted, fined $2616, placed on a conditional release order and disqualified from driving for six months for the speeding offence. He was placed on a conditional release order without conviction for the drug driving charge.

The 30-year-old was pulled over on September 20 after he was detected travelling 129km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Bangor Bypass about 1am. He then returned a positive roadside test for drugs.

Tini’s licence was immediately suspended and he served six months off the road. He was issued with a notice to attend court.

Tini’s lawyer Tomislav Bicanicsaid getting caught had been a “blessing in disguise” for his client because he attended psychological counselling where he disclosed details about his traumatic childhood for the first time.

Mr Bicanic however conceded there was no causative link between the trauma and Tini’s speeding.

The court heard Tini had completed drug and alcohol counselling, attended a treatment hospital, and had completed the traffic offenders program.

Mr Bicanic also noted his client had no previous criminal history or traffic history but had only got his full licence in 2022.

The lawyer asked Magistrate Jillian Kiely to not record a conviction against his client and instead place him on a conditional release order.

Ms Kiely said the speed was “significant” and accepted Tini had made positive steps towards rehabilitation with the treatment he had undertaken.

However she determined a conviction was appropriate for the speeding charge.
