A Rockdale father has been granted bail after he allegedly imported 25kg of steroids in 49 packages over seven months, a court has heard.

Hussein Omar Amin, 54, was charged with intentionally importing prohibited goods and applied for release in Sutherland Local Court on Thursday.

Documents tendered to court said Amin allegedly imported anabolic and androgenic substances between April and his arrest on Wednesday.

A Commonwealth prosecutor alleged the charge related to 49 consignments that occurred over seven months, when between two and 17 packages were imported, which she said amounted to “frequent” offending.

The prosecutor said the amount of substance varied between 80g to almost 2kg per consignment and there was a total of 25kg.

The court heard further charges could be laid against Amin after Australian Border Force officials seized an additional 22 consignments, which still needed to be examined.

The prosecutor told the court there would need to be further investigation into whether the consignees were real or fake people.

She did not oppose bail and conceded Amin did not have a relevant criminal history for these types of matters but did have limited breaches of an apprehended violence order and breach of bail.

It is illegal to import more than 20g of anabolic and androgenic steroids into Australia and carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Amin’s son was present in court to support his father.

Magistrate Philip Stewart noted the charge was a “rolled up” offence relating to a “significant weight of prohibited imports” but agreed to grant bail.

Amin must live at his home in Rockdale, report to police three times a week, not go near or contact any prosecution witness, not go within 500m of any point of departure, surrender his passport, not leave NSW and provide his mobile phone details to police.

The case was adjourned to January 30 at Downing Centre Local Court.
