An elderly man was tragically found dead after a house fire at a southern Sydney home.

Firefighters found the body of the man in his 90s when they attended his home on The Avenue in Hurstville following reports of a fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze, which police do not believe is suspicious.

A neighbour said he was saddened to hear the man had died.

“Poor guy, he was very nice,” the woman said.

“I always saw him in the driveway, he used a walker – he was very old, very shaky, we used to worry about him walking up the driveway on his own carrying all his groceries.

“He was a very nice man, when you’re old you just need more friends.”

Officers from St George Police Area Command and firefighters remain at the home and are analysing scene.

No point of ignition for the fire has yet been identified at this stage of the investigation.

As inquiries continue, police are appealing for anyone with information about the fire to come forward.

One lane in part of The Avenue remains closed off to traffic as crime scene investigators continue to investigate.
