An unemployed Sutherland Shire man has been released on bail after he sold “lower value” drugs via social media using cryptocurrency, a court has heard.

Charles Christopher King, 37, made a release application in Supreme Court on Wednesday following his arrest in June over two charges of supplying more than the commercial quantity of prohibited drugs and dealing with proceeds of crime.

Police will allege King had stockpiled and supplied more than 5kg of testosterone and more than 25kg of psilocybin, which is naturally occurring psychedelic prodrug compound produced by more than 200 species of fungi, which were discovered during a search warrant of his Bangor home.

Police will allege King sold the drugs online using social media, including Tik Tok, and used cryptocurrency as a method of payment. The court heard King allegedly sold the drugs for financial reward.

Police further allege King had $16,000 in Australian currency which is suspected to be the proceeds of crime.

The court heard King was arrested as part of an investigation into domestic violence allegations – which he now faces related charges – before the drugs were allegedly found inside his home.

King’s lawyer submitted the drugs King was allegedly supplying were considered “lower value” than others such as cocaine and meth because testosterone could be obtained legally with a prescription and mushrooms “could simply be picked”.

He conceded there was a large amount of drugs involved given King had been charged with supplying a commercial quantity.

The lawyer said the time spent in prison on remand could outweigh King’s sentence, which may not be full-time custody.

He said King had no criminal history and was not employed but could live with and care for his father in Taree, which would remove him from the Sydney area.

The lawyer also said if King’s phone was monitored by police then that would reduce his risk of offending.

Justice Robertson Wright said the prosecution case against King appeared strong but noted a full time imprisonment sentence was not inevitable and the bail conditions would reduce his risk of reoffending.

He agreed to release King on bail to live with his father in Taree, report to police daily, abide by a night-time curfew and not enter the Sydney metropolitan area unless to attend court or a legal appointment.

King must not take illegal drugs, must surrender a passport, not go near an international point of departure, and a $10,000 surety was offered.

He can only use one mobile phone that has no encrypted apps and provide details of internet devices to police.

King will appear in Downing Centre Local Court on August 24.
