Already new milestones have been set at the event with one of the most memorable when Rachael Haynes became the first Australia player to score a half-century batting at No. 5 in the match against Sri Lanka.

The historic opener of the tournament between Australia and India was a big hit in terms of crowds and broadcast even though the home nation suffered a first-up loss.

But fans got behind both teams with the match at the Sydney Showground attracting 13,432 and more than tripling the record attendance for a women’s international cricket match in Australia.

Proving the women’s side of the game is rapidly growing in popularity, the Australia v India opener was also the second most-watched women’s cricket match ever in Australia and on par with TV audiences in Australia for ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2015.

The opener in Sydney’s west had a combined average audience of 448k across 9 GEM and Fox Cricket.

The only women’s cricket match that was watched by more people was a T20I in 2018 between Australia and New Zealand.

Incredibly the Australia/India match-up as a single game generated more viewing minutes in Australia than the entire 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 held in the West Indies.

In other firsts in the opening stanza of the tournament Sophie Devine became the first batter ever (male or female) to log six T20I scores of 50 plus in succession, when she made an unbeaten 75 in New Zealand’s opening match v Sri Lanka, and Mignon du Preez became the first person to make 100 T20I appearances for South Africa.
