Mosman Martial Arts Academy sumo wrestler to represent Australia at World Championships

MOSMAN Martial Arts Academy’s Brandon Jin will represent Australia for the sixth time in sumo wrestling at the 2016 Junior World Championships.

SUMO is an ancient martial art which flies under the radar in Australia, but it has been Brandon Jin’s passion for several years.

The two-time Young Achiever award finalist is this week’s Junior Sports Star nominee.

Brandon, 14, trains at the Mosman Martial Arts Academy and will represent Australia at the 2016 Junior Sumo World Championships in Mongolia next month.

The competition will be his sixth time representing Australia. He won silver in an Oceania competition last year.

Brandon, 58kg, was also the lightest competitor in the open weight division of the 2015 Junior Sumo World Championships in Japan and faced opponents weighing up to 180kg.

“That was really tough — I honestly thought I would not have a chance because of the weight difference,” he said.

“But it was not as bad as I thought. You’ve just got to try your hardest, really and give it all you’ve got.”

Brandon enjoys sumo because it combines skills from all of the sports he already does.

He swims, boxes, plays rugby union and also trained in katana — Japanese sword fighting — until recently.
