The University of NSW has ranked among the top five universities in the country when it comes to students finding a job after graduating, according to nationwide data for 2019 graduates.
The university in Sydney’s eastern suburbs boasted a 76.2 per cent employment rate for students who graduated in 2019.
The percentage related to those picking up a full-time job within four months.
That made it the fifth best university in the country for that metric – beating other Sydney-based universities including The University of Sydney (75.1 per cent) and UTS (70.8 per cent).
Naomi Que, 23, completed a Media Arts and Computer Science degree at UNSW and entered the workforce this year, working in a technical role for a digital-production centre called UTS Animal Logic Academy.
She said she chose UNSW for a number of reasons including helping her gain employment.
“UNSW offered a combination of degrees that seemed flexible enough to enable me to work in my industry of interest – film and video games – while keeping the door open for work in a more conventional and booming industry, tech.”
She said she was enjoying her work and wanted to inspire audiences through film or video games.
“I work in a technical role where I’m constantly learning and getting challenged, so I’m quite happy,” she said.
“Eventually, I would love to work on a project that stimulates and inspires creativity in its audience whether that is through the medium of film or video games.”
Ms Que has also completed a masters through UTS which she said contributed to her gaining work in her chosen field.
UNSW deputy vice-chancellor Professor Merlin Crossley said he was proud of the university’s employment rate.
“We are enormously proud of our successful employment rate for graduates,” he said.
“UNSW Sydney has built large faculties for the professions, like engineering, business, medicine and law.
“We also have design and first rate science and arts.”
He noted the change to three semesters, which has resulted in a longer academic year for most students, had also set graduates up well for the workplace.
“Engineering and business graduates have particularly high rates of employment, but every faculty, including law, medicine, science, arts, architecture and design, does well,” he said.
*In reference to the above table: University course offerings may affect the earning potential of graduates.
“With a mix of professional training and high quality education, we are ranked among the top 50 universities in the world. This demonstrable quality helps our graduates get jobs.”
UNSW is also ranked eighth in the country for starting salaries for graduates with a median full-time salary of $67,500 for those who graduated in 2019.
