A primary school in Maroubra is set to undergo a huge upgrade worth almost $10 million as it looks to cater for a boom in student numbers.
The major development to St Mary St Joseph Catholic Primary School on Fitzgerald Ave was approved last week by the Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel.
The upgrade will see an existing building knocked down – which includes blocks A, B and C at the school – and the construction of a state-of-the-art new building.
The new building will feature classrooms and learning areas, a library, amenities, and a new staffroom among other bells and whistles. It will stand two-storeys tall when complete.
The school will also get a new basketball court and playground and other buildings will be refurbished.
It will be the biggest upgrade to the school in over a decade.
“St Mary St Joseph is a growing school community,” principal John Farrell said.
“We have grown over the past four years from 302 students to 389 in 2021.
“The planned developments which are due to be completed in 2024 will assist us to cater for this growing demand and provide flexible learning spaces where students are supported and challenged academically, in sport and the arts. A bright future for our school by the beach.”
The planning panel, in making its decision to approve the development, stated it was satisfied the project “will provide improved facilities for the school and community”.
