A longstanding high school in Maroubra is set for a $17 million makeover as it shifts to become a co-ed school.

The major upgrade to Champagnat Catholic College on Donovan Ave was approved last week by the Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel.

The development will see one of the school’s main blocks pulled down and replaced by a state-of-the-art new building, three-storeys tall.

Champagnat Catholic College, formerly known as Marist College, is an all-boys school but it will begin transitioning into a co-ed school in 2023.

The new building will feature new classrooms and learning spaces as well as a new canteen, and co-ed amenities.

Champagnat Catholic College principal Craig Mooney said it was an exciting time for the college.

"The newly approved development will set Champagnat Catholic College up as a contemporary learning hub and allow for a more diverse curriculum as the college transitions to coeducation in 2023.

“The design will enable students to have greater flexibility in how they communicate, create, apply knowledge and make decisions regarding their learning.

“It’s a very exciting time for the college and our community.“

It is the first time in over 10 years the college has received a major upgrade. Landscaping work will also be carried out as part of the upgrade.

“The development will provide improved facilities for the school and parish community without increasing the number of students and teachers,” the planning panel stated, in its decision to approve the development.
