A late-night beach party was shut down by police in Sydney’s southeast over the weekend before another large party sprang up a few kilometres away breaching COVID-19 safety restrictions.

Police have stated infringements will be issued over the first “unauthorised event” which was broken up about 12.30am on Sunday at Yarra Bay Beach and attracted about 80 people.

A police spokesman said Eastern Beaches Police spoke to two men, aged 29 and 32, who owned the DJ equipment being used at the Yarra Bay party.

Pictures have surfaced on social media of a large party taking place on the headland south of Maroubra Beach later the same night – just a few kilometres away – which reportedly ran into the early hours of Sunday.

One participant shared a picture of the Maroubra party on Instagram and wrote: “In a world that is changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to succeed is taking risks. 5am, 15.11.20”.

Under COVID-19 safety restrictions outdoor public gatherings must be restricted to 30 people.

A Maroubra resident, who did not want to be named, told the Southern Courier she went for a walk near Magic Point on Sunday about 7.30am and saw “about 100 stragglers” who she believed had been partying nearby.

She said glass, rubbish and even what she believed to be human faeces were visible from where she was walking.

“(It was) quite disturbing for broad daylight. The human poo was the last straw for me,” she said.

“There was still a lot of rubbish and broken glass left on the track and in the clearings. I passed a guy who was passed out on the side of the track.

“To be fair I saw a lot of partygoers carrying big bags of rubbish but they just dumped it in a massive pile by the start of the track next to a rubbish bin.”

Police were not called to the second gathering near Maroubra.
